The tales of Reynard the Fox are amongst the oldest literary traditions in Western history. Even Geoffrey Chaucer based some of his writing on these fables. Reynard the Fox is the central character in the stories, which comprise of beasts satirically taking the places of various human character types.

These humourous tales have proven so popular that the word 'renard' has replaced the word for fox in French. Reynard himself is a sympathetic hero (despite being owardly and self-seeking) and a strikingly accurate mirror of the human condition.
