Highly detailed and superbly finished, these 1849 Reproduction Staunton Chessmen, with a 4.4 inch king, are handcrafted in high quality
ebony and boxwood in the world famous and classic
Staunton design.Created by the same chess workshop that produces some of the world's finest chessmen, these stunning pieces have been turned from solid wood then painstakingly carved with beautiful detailing.
At 4.4 inches, the king is an imposing figure with his intricate finial and double banding on his collar. He, along with his supporting army, is perfectly weighted for balance and billiard cloth covers their bases to protect your board.
You will notice that the kings in this set are branded at the base with the words “Staunton 1849”. These ebony reproduction pieces also bear the original markings of the kings crown on 1 black knight, 1 black rook, 1 white knight and 1 white rook and, as we know, these pieces will sit on the Kings flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the King’s side of the board. This is because, in descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights were often referred to as being the ‘queens knight, or the ‘king’s rook’.
