Unique, yet still very traditional are the Harrwitz Ebony and Antiqued Chess Men. As with their ebonised cousins, each Harrwitz chess piece is painstakingly turned then expertly carved from high quality woods, to create this exceptional set of luxury reproduction chess men. The 3.5 inches (89 mm) King along with all the chess pieces is weighted and with a felted base to ensure your board is protected.
The darker pieces are carved from high grade ebony and as such make this set of chessmen something of an investment. To create this unique look and striking combination the light pieces have been “antiqued” to present a very professional finish, whilst also further protecting the wood. This superb set of chess men will undoubtedly last for many years, making for a treasured family heirloom.
These ebony reproduction pieces also bear the original markings of the king’s crown on 1 black knight, 1 black rook, 1 white knight and 1 white rook. As we know, these pieces will sit on the king’s flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the king’s side of the board. This is because, in descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights are often referred to as being the ‘queen’s knight’, or the ‘king’s rook’.
The name Harrwitz memorializes
Daniel Harrwitz who was born in Germany in 1821. He was renowned in his day for his reputation (especially in Paris) as a player of blindfold games. He competed against the likes of Howard Staunton, Adolf Anderssen and Paul Morphy. Sadly, he withdrew during a game with Morphy claiming ill health and subsequently retired. He died in 1884 at the age of 62.
New and exclusive to the Regency Chess Company, this luxury chess board is constructed from wooden veneers of graded black anegre and maple wood, with a high gloss finish applied to create a perfect match for the Harrwitz series chess pieces.
The chess board in this set has been expertly crafted by Rechapados Ferrer in Spain using precision laser cutting techniques and stunning wood veneers, expertly lacquered and finished. The underside of the board is finished in a satin veneer in a different color from the playing surface of the board. The veneers used for the underside may vary in color from batch to batch.
