Despite the game of chess originating in the East, the Isle of Lewis Chessmen are probably the most recognisable historical chess set in the world. These famous whalebone pieces were discovered on the shores of the Isle Of Lewis in the early 19th century, although are believed to have originally been made in medieval Norway. However, many other examples of medieval chess pieces are on display in museums all around the world.

Some of the lesser-known medieval chess pieces are celebrated with these stunning resin chessmen by the master sculptors at Berkeley Chess, based on a 14th century German set.
