The aptly named Old English Elite Staunton chessmen are made from the highest grade black ebony and clean grained boxwood. The value of ebony continues to rise as it becomes more and more scarce, rendering this set an excellent investment opportunity. The pieces have been meticulously finished and polished to a natural shine. No lacquer is used to create this amazing finish, it's the hand polishing of the dense hard woods that has created such an immaculate finish, something you won't see in inferior sets. Each set is uniquely numbered and certified as a genuine Regency Chess Company product.
These pieces are by far one the finest examples of
Staunton chessmen available. The design is classic vintage Staunton with every element taking its cue from the Victorian era sets that have become legendary. It is extraordinary to see how the elegant shank of each piece is so perfectly curved and attractively pinched in the centre; this, combined with the broad bases, results in the exquisite proportion that these pieces exhibit with each element fitting perfectly within the set. The pieces are of course weighted in their bases and exhibit superb balance.
The uniformity of the chessmen is outstanding - you can line up all four knights and it's virtually impossible to see any difference between them. In order to achieve this, all four knights in each set are crafted by a single knight carver. Consequently, these chessmen are produced in very limited numbers of no more than batches of just five sets at a time.
The board that these pieces are paired with is manufactured by the reputable family
Manopoulos based in Greece. It is an impeccably presented wooden chess board and represents great value for money. Quality Walnut and Maple veneered construction has produced a board with an old fashioned artisan feel and look about it. The perfect companion for our Old English Elite series chess pieces.
