Historic Chessmen on a Spanish Board
This unique and ornate chess set harkens back to the days before the Staunton design became compulsory in tournament play. It combines replicas of John Calvert's 19th century chess piece design with a Rechapados Ferrer Montgoy Palisander chess board. The design is recognisable for the discs that make each midriff, which our partner craftsmen hand turn just as Calvert did some 200 years ago. In the late 18th century, John Calvert handmade his distinct chess pieces in a London workshop and as the century turned he devised the set of chess pieces we have replicated here at Regency Chess. This extraordinary set of chess pieces boasts a 3.75 inch King, although perhaps the most beautiful piece is the bishop with elegant petals clearly inspired by a Tulip. The hard geometric lines of the the knight are also quickly identifiable and nothing like today's horse. Underneath this stunning set of ornate chess pieces is a Spanish board by Rechapados Ferrer. The Spanish artisans have supplied us with luxury boards for a number of years and the Montgoy Palisander always proves popular. Being Rosewood, this 17.75 inch board is extremely beautiful and the tight grain ensures it is also robust. It's deep colour compliments the stained Calvert Chessmen. The reddish colouring of the chess pieces honours the fashion of the time when they were originally made.
All the components of this ornate chess set are available separately on The Regency Chess Company website; the 17.75 Montgoy Palisander Deluxe Chess Board, Calvert Series Antique Reproduction Chessmen and Wooden Chess Piece Case.
