By far one the finest examples of Staunton chessmen available, the Old English Elite Staunton chess pieces are carved from the highest grade black ebony and clean grain boxwood. Ebony is fast becoming scarce, and prices continue to increase, making these chessmen a great investment opportunity. The design is vintage Staunton with every element taking its cue from the legendary chess sets of the British Victorian era. Most remarkable is how the shanks are so perfectly curved and attractively pinched in the center, making the pieces perfectly proportioned. Every excellently balanced chess piece is laboriously hand polished to achieve their satin-soft sheen, without the use of any lacquers.

The uniformity of all the chessmen is outstanding, and it's virtually impossible to spot any difference between the knights. In order to achieve this a single knight carver makes all four knights. You'll appreciate then that these chessmen are produced in limited quantities, in batches of just five sets.

This larger version of our popular Old English Elite Chess Pieces with a 4 inch King is paired with a beautiful Italian made briarwood and elm veneer chess board of outstanding quality. Finished with a quality gloss lacquered finish, the wood grain and knotting of the briarwood is seductive on the eye and has a rich depth of tone and patterning. The inlaid veneer squares are bordered with a thin veneer of ebony that sections off the playing area from the edge. The underside of the board features a lacquered wooden veneer and has felting pads to protect surfaces underneath. All in all, a unique chess set to enjoy and treasure.
