Inspired by the long and fascinating history of Scotland, this is a stunning and sophisticated set of historical chessmen, intricately sculpted from stone resin.
Scotland has endured many significant developments, resulting in an incredibly rich history of extraordinary growth and change. The infamous Hadrian's Wall was built across Northern England follwing the Roman conquest of Britain in the 1st century AD, in an attempt to prevent the fierce Caledonian tribes from invading the Roman colony of Britannia. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, many Anglo-Saxon English settled in the Scottish Lowlands, after which Scotland began to adopt certain English ways. Scotland grew and thrived with the introduction of a feudal system.
In 1328 Edward III finally recognised Scotland's independence, after which James IV married the daughter of Henry VII of England, paving the way for the Stuart era of Scottish sovereignty in England. in 1707 the old rivalry between the two great nations finally ended with an act of union forming the kingdom of Great Britain.
Many of the most famous faces of Scotland's amazing story have been commemorated in these intricately detailed pieces, with the characters and symbols as follows:
The King: King Robert The Bruce
The Queen: Mary Queen Of Scots
The Bishop: John Knox
The Knight: Sir William Wallace
The Rook: Scottish Tower House
The Pawn: Scottish Thistle
