They share their name with the port city of Messina, Sicily, where for centuries, merchants would compete to sell their imports. The products attracting the highest bids were often those with the brightest, most exotic look.

The intricate patterning and colouring of each of these breathtaking pieces gives them ounces of character. On the rook, for example, there are vine engravings reaching up to a superb turret, while the queen wears a corset of silver or gold at the bottom of her crown.

The mildly Staunton shape of these chess pieces is moulded in the Italfama workshop in Florence, with moulds that are exclusive to Italfama and made nowhere else in the world. And then the expert Florentine craftsmen set to work. No piece is overlooked and the pawns display an extraordinary amount of delicacy in their ornamental design.
