Each piece in this ornate chess set reflects an expression of it's unique identity. "Garvi" is the Hindi word which translates as "proud", and the King in this set stands a proud 4.25 inches tall. The tabletop rook, is a revelation of originality in the Regency Chess Collection. It is carved from solid rosewood and is astoundingly ornate, although still distinctively Staunton in shape. And what of the knight? Sometimes considered to be the most important attacker as well as zonal defender in a game of infinite possibilities. In the Garvi Series it is an arching horse with curved neck and thick mane, that has been hand carved from the turned base upwards. The Queen's design is inspired by the minarets of the Taj Mahal, a structure built by the Mughals in the 17th century. Her pointed headdress circles a decorative spire that is second in size only to the king's crown.

In the 16th century, the Mughal Emperor Akbar conquered his enemies in a quite remarkable way, choosing to invade the Indian subcontinent.
Akbar sought to assimilate his new subjects, unlike his Mongol ancestor, Genghis Khan, who sacked and destroyed the towns he captured. He was fascinated by their various religious and cultural values. That diversity is celebrated in this stunning themed set.
This Garvi Series chessmen require a board measuring 23 inches (60 cm).
