These outstanding chess pieces are carved from solid rosewood and, although still distinctively Staunton in shape, are nothing if not ornate. The tabletop rook is a revelation of originality in the Regency Chess Collection. "Garvi" is the Hindi word which translates as "proud", and here the 4-inch King stands tall and proud over proceedings. The queen's pointed headdress circles form a decorative spire, second only in size to the king's crown. Her design was inspired by the minarets of the Taj Mahal, a structure built by the Mughals in the 17th century.
And what of the knight? Many consider this piece to be the most important attacker as well as zonal defender in a game of infinite possibilities. In the Garvi Series it is an arching horse that has been hand carved from the turned base upwards. Observe the beautifully intricate carvings on its thick mane and curved neck.
Solid rosewood, hand turned
These Garvi Series chessmen require a board measuring 21 inches (55 cm).
This set is inspired by the 16th century Mughal Emperor Akbar who invaded the Indian subcontinent, but sought to assimilate rather than destroy his new subjects.
Unlike his Mongol ancestor, Genghis Khan, who sacked and destroyed the towns he captured, Akbar conquered his enemies in a remarkable way. He was fascinated by their various religious and cultural values, the things that made them unique and exemplified their different cultural identities. This is reflected in a set of ornate chess pieces in which each piece overtly expresses its unique identity.
